What is (*,G)? ; shared tree, needs an RP, driven by control plane protocols

What is (S,G)? ; source tree – between source and receiver, driven by data

RP?

Multicast Flow

  • Receiver sends IGMP join (*,G) through it’s local router (last hop router) towards RP – this router should already have RP information
  • Join is sent to the RP by LHR
  • Receiver state known at RP
  • Source sends a flow to it’s local router (first hop router)
  • This router send a register packer (a unicast) to RP – this unicast encapsulates multicast
  • RP sends a registry stop to FHR
  • S,G flow is built (FHR->RP)
  • S,G flow extended to LHR from RP
  • Receiver receives packets
